Universities and ISO 14000

ISO 14000 is the norm by which Universities and Academic Institutions are advancing in their endeavors of social responsibility. In 1999 the Malardalen University in Lund Sweden registers to ISO 14001:1996, since many have joined either through consideration, implementation or registration. Among others, Department of International Trade at Chung Yuan Christian University in Hsu, Taiwan; University of Missouri-Rolla, Boston University, Washington State, Universidad de Monterrey...

It may not look rosier - some institutions are considering managing their environmental responsibility through ISO 14001 not for love but for need. After being slapped with a sum added well over US$2 million, something has to be done. This brings us to the benefit Academia is finding with implementation and registration of their EMS to ISO 14001:

The resistance factor in academia is high, "Why need it", "It have never being done"... Initiating can be the hardest part... once it gain momentum, even slowly, then is hard to stop. As indicated previously, an ISO 14001 EMS is an excellent compliance tool + benefits herein this portal indicates.
