OSHMS, Occupational Health & Safety Management Scheme (BS OHSAS 18001 | ISO 45001... and ILO-OSH)

OSHMS (Occupational Safety & Health Management System) applies to organizations seeking to prioritize occupational safety and health practices and methods; reduce liability, worker's compensation and health costs; reduce workplace injuries; decrease lost of work hours; and demonstrate prudence in a court of law. Through OH&S MS allows organizations to apply BS OHSAS 18001 | ISO 45001, Loss Prevention & Control or ILO OSH, Z-10 and other recognizeable systems as these are internationally recognize and generraly accepted (as occupational health and safety management systems best practices). These provide a basis for organizations to implement health and safety through reduction of risks by identifying and acting on work relating hazards. With the advent of ISO 45001 the British Standard (BS) OHSAS 18001 officially retires in year 2021.

Europe's ISO 6385 is of interest for those pursuing an Ergonomics standard - Ergonomics Principles in the Design of Work Systems; as a commercialized European scheme.

For ISO 45001 contents format go to OHSAS page.

2018 ISO 45001 brings the Annex SL 2012 set-forth structure format; Annex SL initially noted with ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and others as it provides:

  • The contents of known reference normative standards within occupational safety and health programs such as British Standard (BS) OHSAS, 29 CFR 1910 and equivalent others as applicable within your home country.
  • More contemporary terms of already existing techniques.
  • Transition from many of these programs is fluent. Et al makes transition in ways to assure the application of contemporary methodologies in a fluent manner, and
  • There is time to migration from schemes such as BS OHSAS 18001, ILO-OSH-2001 and others to ISO 45001.

Implementation of a contemporary OSHMS can be concurrent to other risk-based programs such as; EMS Standards such as ISO 14001 or EMAS or FSMS ISO 22000, ISO/IEC 27001 or HACCP MS, as such identifies the common areas in both management systems for further reducing risk. As previously noted, other management systems for health and safety includes OHSAS 18001, ILO-OSH and national equivalents, again as OSHMS, BS OHSAS 18001, Loss Control, Z-10 + 29 CFR 1910 and 1926 and ILO-OSH are compatible with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001... These are in the pursuit to help indistry and government in matters of loss prevention & control.

Thereof, with the information provided organization may opt to implement a mutually inclusive or mutually exclusive management system to ISO 14001, ISO 22000, HACCP MS and may opt to integrate ISO 9001 in part or its entirety. This decision for inclusiveness or exclusiveness implies that ISO 14001, ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and OSHMS - OH&S MS, BS OHSAS 18001 and ILO-OSH can coexist as one management system, namely IMS ("Integrated Managerial System", see IKB© as a possible variant).
