For knowledge to effectively strive within an organization, understanding the application and interaction of these fundamentals is essential.

KM leadership must be relevant to the organizations mission and vision. Management commitment and action involvement is a must for KM to succeed in effectively applied to improve. And it must be integral to the business processes.

Technology enables the organization to identify, collect, evaluate, share and collaborate. Any technology applied must be one that adds value, and value adding is best when is measurable.

Once leadership, organization and technology concurring in place such that add value to the business processes then progression of knowledge takes effect. Knowledge is from, through, and to people, and this can best take place through social interaction activities benefiting the enterprise. Learning comes about.

It must be understood that KM it is not a designated unique functional responsibility. It is integral to the business process and activities.

Knowledge Management, a Primer Overview...

Once upon a time (capital) assets where considered items that we can see, kick and have no self-propelled movement. The intellect that an organization, as a collectivity, posses and through actions applies in the benefit of this same collectivity is "Knowledge", and becoming the asset of the 21st Century. What a collectivity knows and how its places into actions it leverages the collectivity's assets through knowledge, and properly "managed" is essential for success.

 

Through our research [originally expressed in the works of "Atypical (Management) since 1986, it is recognized of importance to success in the portal of the XXI Century, "Knowledge Management (KM)." Thus, our experience goes back over 14 years in the philosophy and concepts of managing knowledge, today many claim experts! We do not; "Knowledge Management (KM)" is not new. Knowledge evolves; the moment we think, we "got it," we may be entering the portal of "obsolescence."

 

KM, a different label applies to something that we research and apply... At BULLTEK LTD still, at times refer to "knowledge management" as "atypical management." "Atypical©..." it is intriguing, exciting, and speculative and may even describe what we have embarked... Whilst "Knowledge Management" as a terms is static "Atypical" and ISO Kaizen-Blitz© is dynamic, and in tune with the services we provide and our mission statement. We approach it to best assist collaborators share and leverage their tacit and explicit knowledge. It's no accident that the companies leading "this beginning millennium blitz" of a so called "new" discipline are companies like Toyota, General Electric, DuPont, Fuji, Edison International, Chevron-Texaco, Mobil... which have been assisted by us and maintain being client companies.

 

     

With the new terminology, lead by proliferation of technology and accessibility to information, we embark on a journey succeeding in managing knowledge. We've found that the biggest pay-back it is initiated when a company maps its knowledge management efforts, for which we have applied techniques and methods for success. Living within our own "paradigm", we have found that their is a tendency to look for complicated solutions to simple problems. For most organizations, it means focusing on one or more of the following:

 

  1. Innovation (see also ISO Kaizen-Blitz©) -- Through creativity pursuing, striving and and applying the new to meet or create need, et all innovation. Much has to do with the team spirit, at times "virtually", in connecting and collaborating to achieve.
     
  2. Response/Speed (see as fundamental example ISO 9001:2000 clauses of sections 4 through 8) -- Empowering the elements of the team, people, to access needed information on time to provide solutions to adverse market or customer perceptions and expectations. And doing it such that is proactive (not reactive). The element of acting and quick decision is essential (...humm, we wonder from where the "beta" testing derived from, applies to technology?) - Note > our technology bubble applies principles of Active Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Reactive AI.
     
  3. Productivity (see also paper on ISO Kaizen-Blitz©) -- While assuring that two fundamental elements are considered in the formula, these efficiency and quality, in today's global market, requires of applying best practices to shorten cycle and response times to demand.
     
  4. Competency (see relevancy example through ISO 14001, 4.4.2 and ISO 9001 6.2.2) -- Developing the skills and expertise of collaborators through, accessibility, on-the-job/on-line training, and "distance" learning (see BULLTEK One-On-OneRSM)...

 

Our approach takes in consideration critical knowledge management aspects, as previously listed. We assist through advancing the management system, identification of technology and developing solutions to existent and unforeseen challenges. Within your organizations infrastructure through advancing (by evolution or revolution) the management system must move on to new "fundamentals" on which the organization can build, integrate, link, and improve to compete and reduce risk.

People sharing knowledge (not uniquely information) and changing their long-held behaviors it is a challenge that we have faced many times in our endeavors assisting organizations in competitiveness within today's global e-conomy. With the advent and proliferation of technology in the form of hardware technology, software, information and related technologies the term (e-conomy) e-business comes about... and e-business is defined, courtesy of IBM ... Improving business processes using Internet technologies. Leveraging the Web to bring together customers, vendors, suppliers, and employees in ways never before possible. Web-enabling your business to sell products, improves customer service, and gets maximum results from limited resources.

 

    Et all, through information we acquire knowledge, provided that we act upon, and more when conditionals (numerous and specific "ifs") are met to achieve innovation.

     

The Internet and its effect...

The Internet has changed and continues to change the ways and flowing information, and thus how business will be conducted. Portal and providers of applications such as those from Oracle, SAP, Lotus, PeopleSoft, QAD, Ariba... (visit an entrance to their portals) are continuously looking for ways to provide the tools and solutions for your organization to take advantage of the "net", as seen we are continuously playing catch-up...

The example and information provided presents one of the thousands or million possible scenarios where real time, connectivity, collaboration... will affect us. Don't think for a moment that your business is not going to be affected.
